Tarp Distribution in Haiti

CRWRC distributed tarps late last week in Masson, Leogane, an already poor community that suffered the loss and damage of 80% of its homes when the January 12 earthquake struck. With food aid to the families already underway, the additional effort of delivering tarps was supported by enthusiastic volunteers from the local youth association, OJPM. The rainy season is approaching and shelter is urgently needed.
International Relief Managers (IRMs) George and Toni Fernhout met with the young community leaders of OJPM to discuss CRWRC working in their community. Upon developing a project proposal, the first step of needs assessment was undertaken. Christian Reformed World Missions (CRWM) found 24 people to conduct the needs assessment survey. OJPM divided the town into ten sectors and provided guides to assist the surveyors. In three days 850 surveys were completed. Five people worked for four days on computers entering the results. OJPM then surveyed another 150 households, for a total of 1,000 households surveyed.
Next, distribution lists were prepared for delivering the tarps. Parole et Action donated a truck for the effort, and the OJPM organized five drop sites. Villagers lined up, with the aged and pregnant at the head of the lines.

At the end of the day weary but excited volunteers celebrated that 900 families had received tarps. The volunteers then gathered in the shade to discuss how to customize the process for the next distribution -- a months’ supply of rice, beans, and oil. Over the next two months 136 tonnes of rice, 15 tonnes of black beans, and 15 tonnes of oil in total will be distributed.
Undergirding this vital work is something yet more vital: a shared faith and hope in a living God. Last week the Haitian churches and the government announced three days of fasting and praying. From Friday through Sunday churches all over the country held services from 7:00 am until noon, singing and praying, as well as mourning the death of so many family members and friends. Ad deBlaeij, CRWRC’s Country Consultant, said, “It was impressive to see the nation of Haiti praying. We thank God for the privilege to be in Haiti at this moment in history.”
CRWRC is very grateful for the outpouring of support in both Canada and the US. $2.5 million was given in the US, and in Canada more than $3.6 million was given by February 12, the deadline for the 1:1 matching set by the Canadian government.
Please also continue to support this effort with your financial gifts.
