Honduras Ministry Internship Volunteer


Opportunity Title:  MINISTRY INTERN with
Asociación para una Sociedad Más Justa (ASJ)

Location:  Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Number of Positions: Varies depending on organizational need and intern skills

Expected Length of Service: Minimum of six months

Purpose: Volunteer positions with ASJ in Honduras generally involve research related to the areas ASJ works in and / or communicating about ASJ’s work to donors and the public (writing articles, taking photos, etc.). Volunteers with skills related to ASJ’s projects (lawyers, social workers, psychologists, journalists, detectives) may also have some opportunity to provide trainings for ASJ staff and / or beneficiaries.

Specific Responsibilities:
1) Specific responsibilities will depend on the needs of ASJ and the skills of the intern, but will most likely include:
• Research specific legal or social issues related to ASJ’s work, analyzing findings, and presenting results in written reports;
• Conduct Internet research in English and Spanish;
• Interview experts, government officials, and others to contribute to investigations on assigned themes;
• Carry out background research contributing to large projects, such as articles, books, and films about ASJ’s work;
• Provide editorial aid to improve reports written by Honduran coworkers regarding research they have carried out;
• Interview ASJ beneficiaries;
• Write articles about ASJ beneficiaries and projects;
• Translate reports, proposals, and other documents;
• Design brochures, bulletins, and other promotional materials;
• Send email updates to donors and supporters;
• Update website and social media.
2) All interns will be expected to:
• Build relationships with the community by staying open and flexible to the culture around you;
• Live and worship with the community during the project;
• Complete recommended reading, and orientation before departure to Honduras;
• Provide ServiceLink, ASJ, and the community with an evaluation of the project;
• Share your story or final report with your church, supporters, ServiceLink and the Association for a More Just Society; 
• Commit to working with ASJ for a minimum of six months;
• Pay all expenses (room, board, transportation, etc.) during time with ASJ, including travel to and from Honduras.

Qualifications:
1) Mature Christian committed to following God’s call to do justice;
3) Highly motivated, a self-starter, and able to work independently;
4) Able to adapt to Honduran culture and context and to ASJ work environment, including working in impoverished urban communities;
5) Willing to accept levels of risk necessarily associated with ASJ’s work; 
6) Demonstrate at minimum a medium-high level of Spanish language proficiency;
7) Good oral and written communications skills, as well as reporting, planning and organizational skills;
8) Basic competence in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Support Services Provided: ServiceLink and the Association for a More Just Society agree to provide:
- orientation materials as well as ongoing logistics and support to meet the needs of the volunteers, local community, 
  and ASJ’s country staff;
- consultation and/or visits by missionary staff when available; 
- opportunity to help volunteers link their individual/church’s mission and vision to work being done.

Requirements of the Volunteer:
1) Complete and submit a volunteer application form, resume/CV, Volunteer Profile and writing sample;
2) Provide a current (within 2 years) ‘vulnerable sector’ criminal background check;
3) Raise prayer and financial support by inviting individuals, businesses and /or churches to give to this opportunity;
4) Attend an orientation session in the Home Office (when possible, or by phone);
5) Adhere to ‘CRCNA Standards of Conduct’,  ‘CRCNA Crisis Management Policy’ and any other applicable policies
   and/or procedures.

Financial Obligations of the Volunteerplease note that costs are estimated and listed in US funds
Travel to country and travel insurance: $750-$1000
Food and Lodging: $300 per month
In country transportation - $30 per month
Airport fees - $37 exit tax
Visa - $0 (but must leave the country every 90 days to renew visa) 
Administrative fee (office space, supplies etc) - $105 per month  
TOTAL Estimated funds needed - $435 per month + $787-$1037 in travel costs
 
Additional Costs – depending on each individual
Passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond date of return)
Vaccinations and required prescription medication
Medical and Travel insurance
Communication (i.e. cell phone, internet)
Tourist trip - if so desired
