Good Works, Inc is a COMMUNITY OF HOPE for those struggling with poverty in rural Appalachia. Based in Athens, OH, they provide biblical hospitality through The Timothy House (their shelter for the rural homeless), The Hannah House (their long term residential care-community), job experience programs, creative volunteer service opportunities and community development ministries in the context of Christian Community. ServiceLink works in partnership with Good Works by linking interested volunteers to their ministry opportunities.
Time Commitment: 9 – 12 months
Dates Opportunity is Available: September, 2011 (date is flexible)
Purpose: Good Works exists to connect people from all walks of life with the poor so that the kingdom of God can be experienced. Experience the people and place of rural Appalachia deeply as you spend 9 to 12 months immersed in the Good Works community.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Live in intentional Christian community at the Good Works’ Hannah House.
• Share your home and life with people transitioning from homelessness.
• Build relationships of mutual dignity with people struggling with poverty.
• Grow in your walk with God through study, reflection and spiritual disciplines.
• Offer hospitality and leadership to short-term mission groups.
• Provide leadership in a wide range of ministry contexts including shelter for people who are homeless; practical outreach to widows, elderly people and at risk kids; and weekly community meal.
• Housing, food and a stipend provided.
Qualifications and Expectations of the volunteer:
1) must be a minimum of 18 years old
2) have a desire to grow in your relationship with Christ and in relationships with people who are vulnerable, and who are struggling with poverty.
3) have a desire to love and serve the poor and who might benefit from living in an intentional Christian community for a year
4) seek to create a discipleship training experience where there is a balance of action, education and relationships with people in need
Budget: minimal expenses plus travel costs
